Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff has asked to join Everton and reunite with Rafa Benitez

Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff needs a club to put his faith in more than Newcastle.

Such is the ruling of former Leeds United star Noel Whelan who believes Rafa Benitez’s Everton will provide the 23-year-old with “stability” from which he will “get the best out of him”.

Longstaff has been closely linked with the Benitez reunion, who made his Newcastle debut, at Goodison Park this summer.

The previously loaned Blackpool and Kilmarnock player ran out of luck under current United boss Steve Bruce, but thrived under Benitez’s tutelage when he broke into the Magpies’ first team in the 2018/19 season.

Longstaff was impressed so much that he was linked with a England call-up, as well as a big money move to Manchester United, and Whelan believes he could revitalize his career in the event of a move to Everton.

“How often do we see her?” Whelan told Football Insider.

“The managers who have been in the clubs, they have worked with players and when they move to a new team they put this trust in them.

“Longstaff obviously stayed on Rafa Benitez’s mind during the time he got him at Newcastle. I’m obviously a fan, and I think that’s the same for the players towards the coaches too.

“When you have that kind of relationship that has gone well with guys beforehand, you know you’re going to get the same commitment from them.

“Not a lot of money in this day and age for a young player. There is still work going on with him and he will understand that too. You never stop learning as a player.

“There’s room to maneuver with Longstaff. I think he needs a place where he feels he belongs, a place where he can get regular football.

“A club that he will believe in a little more than what Newcastle did over the last season. He needs a base, he needs some stability and I think that will probably bring out the best in him.”
