Kabul: Taliban fighter Clarissa Ward indicted on CNN
Colonel Richard Kemp warned that “government buildings” and “sports stadiums” are among the “main targets” that terrorists can hit. The Taliban spread across Afghanistan this month, capturing the capital, Zabul, on August 15.
British and American forces are desperately trying to evacuate Western nationals and their Afghan allies from Kabul International Airport.
The 2001 US-led invasion of Afghanistan came in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C., which left 3,000 people dead.
Al-Qaeda planned the attacks from Afghanistan, where the Taliban sheltered them.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror about the group, Colonel Kemp warned: “If they can’t get the US, the UK remains a big target.

“Freedom in Afghanistan, as we saw in the 9/11 attacks, will give them time and help plan for such an attack.”
The Taliban have pledged to stop providing sanctuary to al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups, as part of a deal struck with the Trump administration.
However, Col. Kemp says they are unlikely to deliver on their promise.
He said, “They have been close companions for some time and have the same religious doctrines and beliefs.

They campaigned and fought together for two decades and their bond may be even greater than before.
“This could mean a much greater threat from Al Qaeda’s Mark II, and an even greater danger to British citizens.”
There have already been reports of a number of extremist Islamic groups working with and fighting alongside the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Colonel Kemp also warned that Britain faced a renewed threat from jihadists who were “inspired” by the Taliban’s victory, both in the UK and abroad.

An estimated 700 British nationals traveled to Iraq and Syria between 2013 and 2017 to join the terrorist group ISIS.
The colonel commented, “We are in danger of an attack from the jihadists who are already here and who have been inspired by the Taliban victory in Afghanistan.
“It’s happening now – radical people are seeing this story unfold and being inspired by it.
They are celebrating the rise of al-Qaeda again and the threat from these people is immediate.
Taliban ‘seriously threaten people’ Fox allegations
Lord Jonathan Evans, the former head of MI5, said on Thursday that international terrorist groups may once again use Afghanistan as a base to attack the West.
He warned, “If they were given the opportunity to stifle the infrastructure for training and work, that would pose a threat to the West.
There is also the psychological impact of the inspiration that some people will derive from the failure of Western power in Afghanistan.
“Practically speaking and in terms of ungoverned space, but also psychologically, this will likely mean an increase in the threat over the coming months and years.”

Resistance against the Taliban erupted inside Afghanistan, with anti-Taliban forces gathering in the Panjshir Valley.
Some of them are former fighters from the Northern Alliance, an anti-Taliban alliance that fought the group for years before the 9/11 attacks.
After the atrocities, the Northern Alliance forces worked with the United States to overthrow the Taliban and install a new government.
