Roy Keane criticizes Manchester United midfielder Fred and makes a false judgment on Bruno Fernandes

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has criticized Fred for not intervening more strongly to prevent Southampton from advancing in today’s afternoon game at St Mary’s.

Having remained in control for most of their opening exchanges, the Saints, who were crushed 9-0 by United in their last encounter with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, took the lead when Che Adams’ drive from the edge of the box veered off goal. Unique and at the back of the net.

Adams had slipped inside with a clever flick from his attacking partner Adam Armstrong and Fred failed to get close enough to stop him from firing a shot towards goal.

The Brazilian’s refusal to close the former Sheffield United striker was called into question by Kane during his halftime analysis.

Kane told Sky Sports: “You have to be prepared to put him down and he’s just hanging up his leg and he’s not doing enough.

“Well, he’s unlucky because of the deviation, but he has to do more and he has to do better than that.”

While there was no shadow of doubt about the goal and the way the ball ended up in the net, United were less than impressed by not getting a free kick in preparation when Bruno Fernandes was fouled against United. Left winger by Saints defender Jack Stephens.

Stevens stepped through the Portugal international and the latter through that referee Craig Pawson would stop play and award a free kick in United’s direction.

However, no whistle was sounded, which led to play continuing and hitting the hosts in front.

For Kane, the referee made the right call to allow play to continue.

“I don’t think it’s wrong,” Kane added. “I think Fernandez should probably move his body a little more.

“But the most disappointing thing is what happened next. He played fast for Southampton but [Harry] Maguire and Fred have to do a better job.”

United equalized ten minutes into the second half with Mason Greenwood’s second goal of the season.
