CM Punk discusses AEW’s hands-on commentary capabilities

CM Punk and AEW President Tony Khan attended AEW Rampage: The first post-show dance media meeting. With Punk now officially all the elite, the world is his oyster.

While Best in the World’s primary concern in AEW will be its match against Darby Allin, fans are already wondering if Punk has plans to go through the forbidden door, wrestle on AEW Dark, or even suspend work.

“Did you just shake your head? (laughs),” Punk Khan asked after a reporter raised the possibility of comment.

“I was like, you haven’t even got yours yet!” Tony replied.

The ad schedule isn’t on Punk’s priority list, nor does it work for AEW YouTube shows.

“I’m pretty sure I’m going to be a TV guy,” Punk said. “I haven’t seen darkness or height. Two of my friends and I talked about this earlier. I’m not a tech guy. I’m obviously an old boss now. When kids say, ‘Oh, YouTube!’ unfortunately I don’t know anything. I’m still watching tablets DVD It’s a different generation now I’m Terry Funk now I’m pretty sure I’m here and we got that first one away yeah I’ll watch it all but I haven’t done it yet That doesn’t mean I won’t [eventually]. “

Fans have been waiting seven years to see the former WWE Champion return, and Punk himself has been sewing the seeds for the past 18 months to make his AEW debut.

Tony Khan mentioned that he chatted with Punk constantly since shortly after his AEW Dynamite debut.

“We kept in touch, and I really enjoy talking to him. He obviously saw some of the dynamics and we had some conversations about it,” Khan said. “I really wanted (CM Punk) to come back and wrestle so hard. Lost hope.”

The AEW chief quipped that this might happen much sooner, but they needed to wait for the storage fans to return on a regular basis.

“I guess it didn’t make sense to do it when there were no fans. I would like to think we managed the epidemic as well as we could,” Khan continued. “Again, it wasn’t something anyone could ever plan, but it definitely gave [myself and Punk] Plenty of time to talk because there was no rush to do anything because the fans weren’t coming back anytime soon. I think it was worth the wait. It was really worth the wait.”

Khan revealed himself and Punk collaborated to make AEW Rampage: The First Dance happen, and it was a “happy coincidence” that the venue was available until August 20.

“The conditions had to be right, but frankly this whole thing had a lot of great ideas in the lead up to that, including coming to the United Center,” Khan said. “When we talk about happy accidents, the building was available last Friday night and we were able to get it. All these things lined up perfectly. Discount. [Darby Allin], to find someone super hot to match with someone, you know, the return of CM Punk and wrestling is the hottest thing that has happened to the wrestling business in many years. The excitement we felt in the building was very real. And yes, I really enjoy talking to him. I didn’t feel compelled. I think it sounded like something we really wanted to do, and it was really fun to work on. It’s just the culmination of the most exciting and most anticipated thing we’ve ever done.

“There hasn’t been a wrestling at United Center for a long time, and CM Punk’s idea was to bring it back to United Center, and it was a great idea,” Khan continued. “Arthur Ashe was something that I found, really, a couple of years ago. When I was looking for a place that no one was running, when I was looking for rooftop pitches where we could put on a special show, it was right under our noses the whole time. I couldn’t believe nobody did. It’s going to be a really special night. I think there’s going to be a good chance CM Punk will be a big part of it. It would be a fantastic return for one of the wrestling greats of all time in one of the greatest wrestling cities ever, to do it in a place where no one has wrestled before.”

As mentioned earlier, the first dance was a double effort from Khan and Punk, but the two had different “instincts”.

“I think his instincts were really good about it. We wanted to have a moment of big surprise, and I think my instincts were that we wanted to sell the building (laughs),” Khan said. “We also wanted everyone to know what was coming. We kind of sat together and got along perfectly. That was exactly what we both wanted to surprise, but everyone knows what’s coming. We created a global buzz all over the world. The hype was around the city of Chicago today. Obvious. You can feel it everywhere, everywhere the wrestlers watch. You may feel like people care about that.”
