Liverpool mum of three, 31, dies of Covid despite no underlying health issues

A 31-year-old mother of three from Merseyside has died after contracting the coronavirus.

Katie Gill, of Moreton, was rushed to Arrow Park Hospital in early August with breathing difficulties after contracting the virus, and after a two-week battle against the coronavirus, Katie died in hospital on August 14, leaving behind her husband and three children.

Her family says she has already received one vaccine and was “absolutely cautious”.

Katie’s best friend Karen Rotheram has spoken out about her death and to pass on the Katie’s family’s warning to others that the epidemic “has not gone away.” “Kate was the sweetest, kindest, funniest person who would do anything for anyone,” Karen said. “She was hospitalized at the beginning of August and had COVID-19 at home before that.

Her breathing was normal, so she had to go to the hospital and her condition deteriorated there. It was really fast, in just 10 days.

“Katie was one of those people when there were lockdowns and they were just as vigilant, and would do everything she could to keep her family healthy.

“Given her age, and because she was only 31, it was a huge shock.

“I had a jab and she was safe.”

Karen said Katie’s family and friends want people to realize that the risk of contracting the coronavirus remains, even though the restrictions are now over. “I think that’s what people don’t understand,” she said. Getting back to the new normal but COVID is still around.

It has no age, some people recover, some people don’t but everyone should be aware.

“Even though you can do a lot of things now, you still need to be aware and get your hits.” Katie was due to get her second this month. She took the first punch to protect herself and her family.”

Karen says Katie’s family “don’t want any other families to go through what they have.” She said: “The family just wants to say they obviously don’t want the other families to go through what they’ve had to go through the past two weeks – for everyone to stay safe to get the punches done – that’s very important.”

A fundraiser for Katie’s family, focused on the Birkenhead North End community in which Katie grew up, was created to help her family with funeral costs. “This was Katy’s community but she moved to Moreton about two years ago,” Karen said. “The North End is a very close community, so even if you move away you are still seen as part of the community, we are all very close here.

“Whenever there was a fundraiser or something else, Katie was always one of the first people to introduce herself.”

Karen says she finds it difficult to look back through pictures of her and her best friend, who “told each other everything”.

She said: “It breaks my heart when I look back at the family photos, it’s so sad, I don’t think he has sunk yet.
