Thirty years after Beverly Alite tried to take her young life, Kylie Asher is still haunted by a vicious killer nurse.

And the horrific victim, who had sustained brain damage, now fears that her abuser may soon be released from prison and return to her family’s life.

Allit was sentenced to 13 life imprisonment in 1993 for killing four children and injuring nine other children in her care.

The 52-year-old is being held in a high-security psychiatric hospital, but the minimum tariff for her 30-year sentence expires in November, and if it is appropriate to transfer her to a prison, she will have the right to apply for parole.

Kylie’s father Allan, 64, said his 31-year-old daughter often asks, “Will you come and get me?” He added: “Kylie is looking under her bed and in her closet at Alette. This can go on for days and days and we often find her in the early hours of the morning searching.

“A few years ago, Kylie spent three weeks in the hospital and we could see that there was a nurse she didn’t really like.

“When she got home, she told us she thought she was Allet.

“I could see the resemblance, she had been terrified the whole time.

“It’s scary to think that Allitt could be free someday.

Lifetime tariffs would have been appropriate. I can’t see the difference between her and Peter Sutcliffe. We have a real fear that if she is set free, she could one day enter our lives.

“We are also concerned about the possibility of giving her a new identity as the Jimmy Bolger killers.

“Although time has passed, a lot of people are still very angry, so there is nothing that can happen to her.

“The only way to ensure her safety would be a new identity and that would leave us looking over our shoulders.”

Kylie was only 15 months old when Alette, nicknamed “The Angel of Death,” attempted to kill her in Ward 4 at Grantham and Stephen Hospital in Lynx.

She injected a lethal air bubble under the child’s arm.

Kylie survived despite the odds after suffering two heart attacks but suffered permanent brain damage. She was later diagnosed with the rare Kabuki makeup syndrome, which means she has problems with fine motor skills, mobility, and hearing.

Police were called to Grantham Hospital after a series of unexplained deaths in the pediatric ward in 1991.

Patients who were stable and were expected to recover inexplicably died while others were left in a coma.

When investigators examined personnel records they found that Allitt was on duty when all the accidents occurred.

The nurse, who suffered from Munchausen disease by proxy, injected the young children with air, insulin or other drugs over a period of 59 days.

When she was imprisoned in 1993 at the age of 24, a judge told her she posed a “serious danger” to others and was unlikely to be considered safe enough to be released.

But in 2007, an appeals court ruled that Allitt must serve at least 30 years — less than the one year and 190 days he spent in custody before being sentenced.

She was being treated at Rampton Hospital in Nottingham.

Understandably, doctors would have to release Allitt to enter the prison system before any attempt at parole.

In 2007, the Supreme Court heard that consultant forensic psychiatrist Professor Bob Beckett wrote a report on the killer after receiving instructions from her attorney.

Doctors recommended working with the prison service to help her “leave the hospital if possible to return to lifelong service.”

Professor Beckett added: “I can assure you that this process can take several years to achieve given the patient’s psychopathology and the length of time she has already spent in hospital.

“However, I think it is inevitable that unless Mrs. Allitt is going to become stagnant, spend her life and die in hospital, opportunities for her rehabilitation must be opened.”

Former Grantham Mayor Alan said locals did not forgive Alit for her crimes, and many believe she caused the hospital’s demise.

He added: “We had a training school for nurses, a maternity unit, an emergency unit, and a 24-hour pediatric ward.

“But most of that was gone and it seemed like she was the cause.

Her crimes left a sinister feeling in the city. There is a stigma because of the association that will never go away.”

Alette grew up in the village of Corby Glen, just a short drive from where she preyed on her defenseless victims.

The killer, who had two sisters and a brother, volunteered for childcare jobs as a teenager before leaving school to enroll in nursing school.

Her father, Richard, worked unlicensed, and her mother, Lillian, was a janitor at the school.

Alan and his wife, Sharon, 61, adopted Kylie as a toddler. The family still lives in Grantham. They are vehemently opposed to any move to release Allit.

Alan said: “When the minimum sentence of 30 years was passed, we felt the sentence was good. But now that deadline is looming, we will fight any attempt to free her.

“I have no idea what it looks like now.

“I probably wouldn’t recognize her even if she passed me on the street.”

Because of the new rules, it will be the Department of Justice’s responsibility to refer Allitt to the Parole Board, following legal guidelines. The council confirmed last night that her case was not referred to them at this stage.
