iOS 15 beta still hasn’t fixed a decade-old bug

[ad_1]

I really enjoyed the iOS 15 public beta weeks ago, and new features like Live Text and UX improvements like cluster notifications really make it a better experience than iOS 14. But week after week, new beta update after the new update, I’ve made a nauseating discovery: no iOS 15 fixes a bug that has been in iOS for a decade.

Let me preface by saying that this is not an experience-destroying disaster or a phone-brick disaster; This is an annoyance, a benign deformity so benign that it’s been placed at the bottom of every priority list since it came out, if the iPhone developers ever noticed it.

What am I talking about? Well, imagine this: you’re chatting away in the Messages app and you want to send a picture. You can click the action bar to open your photos and click the photo you want to send, which then appears in the draft of your message window. You hit the submit button, and the draft disappears. But the photo was not sent. The process repeats – open the gallery, click on the image, hit send – and it still hasn’t been sent.

Has that happened to you? Maybe once? Can’t you remember?

Such is the insidious genius of this insect, which I am convinced is conscious, to wreak havoc now and then before it falls asleep. It is difficult to cause on purpose, and therefore not reproducible. It stays off the radar.

But this glitch happens at the most inopportune moment, leaving me in an awkward predicament: I’m smugly texting friends “You won’t believe this!” Then get ready to send an amazing picture or meme in perfect timing, and after that, I just can’t. Bug strikes! My friends laugh at my apparent incompetence! I fell back!

(Image credit: Future) Yeah, well, there’s a solution. but.

Now, there’s a fix of sorts – just manually close the Messages app and open it again. Poof, photos are uploaded and sent as normal. But even this process can take precious seconds as it blocks the appropriate window to send a funny picture. I curse the insect, which was clearly waiting, and lament all the laughs it failed to bring into this world.

Sometimes I go months without going wrong, and I’ll wonder – did you ever imagine this whole thing? Have I not been able to send photos before? I may have misremembered to cover up the recollection in hindsight that I had the perfect picture of a refutation in an argument, visual l’esprit d’escalier. Maybe my brain gets it wrong and he invented a digital gremlin that brings it out for me every once in a while.

But then it happens again, and I look like a stuntman who can’t figure out how to send a simple picture. Again, this is far from a crippling iOS flaw, and I enjoy using it 99.99% of the time. I really dig iOS 15, and its new features are exciting.

However, I can only humbly ask Apple to fix this one thing. It may be small, but I’ve apparently been seeing it since I got the iPhone 4 in 2010. As the saying goes, “It’s not the mountain in front of you that bothers you – it’s the grain of sand in your shoe.” Or it’s so unfortunate that you have a perfect picture to send and no way to send it (for a few seconds).
