Southampton striker Che Adams mocks Fred after Manchester United’s own goal

Che Adams mocked Manchester United’s Fred after his goal against Southampton.

After kicking off such a brilliant start last week with a 5-1 defeat of Leeds United, United lacked the same attacking vitality and penetration on Sunday as they faced a frustrating 1-1 draw on the south coast.

United felt cold due to the Saints’ strong start, and although there were opportunities to score from several set-pieces, it was the home side who deserved to go ahead after half an hour.

The goal came after Bruno Fernandes was sent off the ball – arguably a foul in the process – and then played for Adams, whose shot from the edge of the penalty area just slipped past David de Gea.

The Scotland international thought the goal was his and ran away in celebration, but was later awarded as a unique own goal after a massive deviation from the Brazilian’s dangling leg pointed him towards goal.

It could have been Adams’ first goal of the season, having scored nine times in 36 games last season, and he looks a bit disappointed as he hits Fred after the game.

“I think they gave it to him [Fred] The goal was because he didn’t score much,” the BBC reported.

“I consider [deflection] as an aid.”

The irony, of course, is that Fred did indeed find the back of the net in last week’s win over Leeds and he currently has more goals to his name this season than Adams.

United managed to equalize in the second half after Mason Greenwood hit a ball under the goalkeeper after great work from Fernandes and Paul Pogba.

But a winner was not forthcoming as United lacked momentum in the attacking third, instead the Saints came closest to winning the match after Adam Armstrong scored but De Gea did well to deny him.

Adams was pleased with the result and the way his team fought for a point.

“We drilled well and got the point. They are a great team, but we fought well and got a well deserved point.

“We had chances at the end to beat them ourselves but we have to take the positives today and move on to next week.

Adam Armstrong is hard to defend and I love playing with him.
