Former Chelsea star Tammy Abraham gets a standing ovation in his debut for Roma under Jose Mourinho as Romelu Lukaku’s substitute for bullying Arsenal

New Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku may be the man of the match against Arsenal, but the man who replaced him was also delighted on his debut.

Tammy Abraham joined Jose Mourinho’s Roma squad in the wake of the Belgian’s return to Stamford Bridge, and his first performance in Italy suggests he will do well there.

Abraham had his first appearance in Rome

After his £34m transfer just five days ago, the 23-year-old was thrown straight into the starting line-up against Fiorentina.

Abraham shined as the capital club scored a 3-1 victory in the opening match of the season.

And he helped them with a red card in the 17th minute to La Viola goalkeeper Bartholomew Dragowski, as the Englishman caused the Polish star’s misdemeanor.

Abraham was the star of the show at the Stadio Olimpico, to the delight of the club’s fans, who gave their new striker a standing ovation when he was substituted after 69 minutes.

It wasn’t surprising either, given that he made his first two goals in the victory.

Abraham, who had never scored more than three goals in a single league season before in his career, got the ball rolling after just 26 minutes.

After running into Lorenzo Venuti on the left side of the box, he drifted inside and waited for the perfect moment to feed former Arsenal and Manchester United player Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

He was given his turn and eventually finish as a target but not before the VAR gave him a good look.

Fiorentina leveled the match through Tottenham and West Ham’s Nikola Milinkovic transfer goal after the hour, but only four minutes later Abraham stepped in again.

Mkhitaryan netted a pass with a timed potion expertly behind La Viola’s defense, and as the Armenian missed a pass across the six-yard area, former Aston Villa midfielder Jordan Veritot arrived at the back post to put the finishing touch on a move.

And the Frenchman, after Abraham left the field, put some shine on the scoring line with his second goal in the match 11 minutes before the end of the match.

Meanwhile, Mourinho was pleased with his attacking options after he also signed Uzbekistan’s Eldor Shumorodov and left him out of the starting line-up.

He said after the match: “It’s not easy to leave someone on the bench, but Shumorodov can play on the left, and he can be a striker with Tammy as well.

“At the moment, neither of them were in the same condition as the players who worked in pre-season training from day one, so I thought of using Pellegrini in the back.

“Shoumo is very dangerous at attacking space, Tammy is more than a reference point, so even if he wasn’t tired at that point, I’d make the switch after a few minutes anyway.

“We have many different solutions, but at this moment what I love is the spirit, the defensive organization is getting there.”
