An American reporter detailed her perilous journey to escape Afghanistan from Kabul airport as a “window of opportunity” offered by British forces. Susanna George of The Washington Post told MSNBC that she was only able to get to her flight after British soldiers arrived to evacuate her citizens from a safe den. Joe Biden said US soldiers have not extended their security perimeter beyond the vicinity of Karzai’s airport, while urging Americans seeking evacuation to head to the airport unaccompanied.
“We managed to escape from Kabul,” the Washington Post’s chief correspondent said.
We were fortunate to be able to use a window where British forces were conducting their evacuations.
These forces have cleared part of the road outside one of these gates at the airport, of which you are now viewing photos of these gates.
“And there are just hundreds of people piling up against them.”

She continued, “These British forces pushed these people back through the Taliban checkpoint and created a section of the road that gave us this small window of opportunity to use that section of the road to get into the military airport and get on a flight that will take us out of Kabul.”
Ms George shared more details about her crew’s escape from Kabul, writing: “Initially, the men were wary about helping us.
“We were not part of the process of evacuating them, and the officer said they needed approval from the US embassy.
“But after a few phone calls, they agreed to direct Tasal, another Washington Post employee, and their families through the Taliban checkpoint.”
On Friday, President Biden said, “We have no indication that they were unable to reach Kabul, via the airport.”
Biden is facing pressure to extend the deadline for evacuations beyond August 31.
He said discussions were underway with leaders of other countries to postpone the deadline.
The president said: “There is no way to evacuate so many people without pain and the heart-breaking images you see.
“We have made changes, including expanding the arrival area around the airport – the safe zone.
“We have a long way to go and there are still a lot of mistakes.”
