Gary Neville said Harry Kane could lift Manchester United to the level needed to win the Premier League title this season.

The Spurs striker, who told Spurs at the end of last season that he wanted to leave the club this summer, is a target for rival Manchester City, who made a £100m bid for Kane.

However, Neville believes his former club United should make a move for the England captain before the transfer window closes on Tuesday, August 31.

The Sky Sports pundit has compared Solskjaer’s United’s progress to Liverpool’s early years under Jurgen Klopp, but said the rise of major club Anfield in Klopp’s fourth season was spurred by the arrivals of Alisson and Virgil van Dijk.

Neville believes Kane could have a similar impact to Manchester United…

“[Manchester United] Obviously those chaotic years after Sir Alex Ferguson with David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. Chaotic in terms of dealing with managers, chaotic in terms of transfer strategy but also engagements, very interactive.

“They have completely changed in the last three seasons. I think what they are looking at is probably the Sir Alex Ferguson era where the club was patient but they will also look at Liverpool. I have given Jurgen Klopp time to build a squad, slowly progressing year after year.

“If you look at Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first 99 games, which he’s played now, and Jurgen Klopp’s first 99 games they’re roughly accurate in terms of performance – 1.89 points per game for Jurgen Klopp and 1.86 points per game. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“I know they were defeated by Manchester City that season, but it was an amazing performance from Liverpool – 97 points and 99 points in two seasons on the jump.

“My gut feeling is [new United signings Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane] He wouldn’t have the same effect on Manchester United as Alisson and Van Dijk to get the 90-95 points they would need to win the league. I think it will be short.

“Chelsea, you see what they did with Romelu Lukaku. You see Van Dijk came back to Liverpool. You can see that City came for Jack Grealish and Harry Kane. If they take Kane, it’s going to be a big problem at United.

“I find it hard to understand why Manchester United have not taken that extra step in this transfer window.

“In terms of Manchester United, they have always gone after the best player in the Premier League, the best English or British player in the Premier League, historically.

“Anthony Martial, Daniel James, Jesse Lingard, you’re talking about potentially dumping a lot of wages out there, maybe getting some transfer fees.

“Why don’t they go to Harry Kane this week? Because I think if Harry Kane goes to Manchester United, you can get up to 90 to 95 points.

In the first multinational force of the new season, Gary Neville analyzed the first 99 games Jürgen Klopp and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played for Liverpool and Manchester United respectively.

“Without him, they still have to replace Edinson Cavani and Martial next summer. Martial won’t do that, Cavani only has one year left.

“They’re going to have to get a striker at some point, so why don’t we make the guy now give them that momentum to get to 95? Because I don’t think they can do that only with Sancho and Varane.

“With the coach, I still think you can argue that he has to prove himself quickly because I still think the Europa League final was bad. It will stop if something doesn’t go right this season.

“But I think Ole deserves another 12 to 18 months to build because Manchester United tried Jose Mourinho’s quick quest and it didn’t work. Louis van Gaal, who went for a different style of play, didn’t work. He failed miserably.

“So they’ve gone to someone who has brought it back to their roots. He should get a chance to do that. Manchester United will need to turn a new attacking center in the next 12 months, the man is now available if you pay £150m.

“I personally think Ken’s entry would be a differentiating factor.”
