Research indicates that chains of supervolcanoes ‘acted as a safety valve for Earth’ increasing and decreasing carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and regulating temperatures.

As the effects of the global climate crisis worsen, it would be all too easy for our planet to have its own means of regulating levels of greenhouse gases and average temperatures… It turns out that such a system exists – sort of.

New research indicates that extensive chains of volcanoes, which occur in many parts of the Earth, previously played a key role in stabilizing temperatures at the Earth’s surface, according to scientists at the University of Southampton.

Over the past 400 million years, processes involving natural collapse and rock formation at the Earth’s surface have captured and stored large amounts of carbon dioxide, but volcanic eruptions also emit large amounts of carbon dioxide. So the researchers described the process as a “balancing process” that helps maintain favorable conditions for life.
