It’s the second year that M&S has closed its stores on Boxing Day, following a last-minute decision in 2020 following what the retailer described as a “uniquely challenging year”. During the Christmas period, most of their stores will be open longer, and on Christmas Eve, some locations will be open until 8 pm.
Many retailers made their Boxing Day decisions later last year, but M&S said by telling workers in August, it would give them more time to make their Christmas plans.
It follows a similar move from Morrisons, which announced earlier this month that it would keep its stores closed on Boxing Day.
Boxing Day is usually one of the busiest days for retailers, who launch their sales after Christmas. Before the pandemic, shoppers were spending nearly £3.3 billion in stores on December 26 alone.
However, amid strict closures at the end of last year, a slew of retailers including Wickes, Pets at Home and Asda opted to close.
John Lewis and Waitrose have not opened the majority of their Boxing Day stores for several years, with the exception of Waitrose stores at Welcome Break motorway service stations and Shell front yards, and the John Lewis store in Manchester’s Trafford Centre. This year is expected to be the same.
