Three people were killed and two drivers arrested after a serious collision with a truck, minibus and car on the M25 in Essex.

A fourth person is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after the accident, which occurred near Waltham Abbey around 6.15pm on Monday and caused long traffic delays.

Essex Police said in a statement that the collision occurred between junctions 27 and 26 of the anti-clockwise highway, with two drivers being arrested on suspicion of causing death and serious injury due to dangerous driving.

The M25 remains closed between these two intersections, and Highways England hopes to reopen on Tuesday morning.

Police said they are keen to track the movements of all three vehicles – a Ford Mondeo, a minibus and a truck – that led to the collision.

They are urging witnesses with dashcam footage to file a report at www.essex.police.uk, or call 101 citing the incident 972 on Monday, August 23.

Information can also be submitted to Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800555111 or https://crimestoppers-uk.org.

Detective Sgt Steve Holmes, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This evening has been incredibly challenging as we continue to work as quickly as we can to piece together exactly what led to this tragic accident.

“My thoughts and those of all the officers on site are with the families of those who lost their lives this evening.

“Currently, two drivers have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and suspected of causing serious injury due to dangerous driving.

“I need anyone with more information to come forward.”
