At this time last week, August 17, the UK had recorded 26,852 cases and 170 deaths.

It is the highest number of daily deaths since 175 cases were recorded on March 12.

On Monday, 46,401 people were given their first dose of the vaccine, bringing the total to 47,737.142 – 87.8% of the UK population over 16 years old.

131,283 people were given their second dose, which means that 77.2% of the population is now fully vaccinated.

It comes as weekly deaths linked to the coronavirus in the UK reached their highest level since March, the Office for National Statistics said.

There were 652 coronavirus deaths recorded in the week ending August 13, an increase of 6.7% over the previous week.

One in 18 recorded deaths (5.5%) reported COVID-19 on the death certificate.

It’s the highest number since 800 deaths from COVID were recorded in the week ending March 26.

The latest number includes 550 deaths in England, 41 in Scotland, 40 in Northern Ireland and 19 in Wales, the office said.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she could not rule out the re-imposition of some COVID restrictions, following a “significant increase” in cases.

In a Scottish government briefing on the coronavirus, she said new cases had nearly doubled in the past week, and said the country had reached a “fragile and pivotal moment in our journey through the pandemic”.

Scotland has also announced plans to create a judge-led public inquiry into its government’s handling of the health crisis.

Researchers in South Korea found that people with the most transmissible delta variant had a viral load 300 times higher than those with the original version of COVID-19.

This means that the virus spreads more easily from person to person, resulting in increased infections and hospitalizations.

“But that doesn’t mean that delta is 300 times more contagious… We think its transmission rate is 1.6 times that of the alpha variant, and about twice the original version of the virus,” said Lee Sang-won, a South Korean health ministry official. .

The delta variant was first identified in India and the alpha variant in the UK.

4,700 people tested positive after following up on Boardmasters in Newquay earlier this month – 800 people are believed to live in Cornwall, but cases are scattered across the UK.

It comes despite festival-goers aged 11 and over being required to prove their COVID case via the NHS app before being allowed to enter the all-sold-out event.

Attendees had to demonstrate that they had either received a dual vaccine, demonstrated a negative lateral flow test performed within 24 hours of arrival, or had normal immunity after a positive PCR test performed at least ten days prior.

Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly had the second highest rate of coronavirus cases among England’s 312 regions, up from 383.5 per 100,000 to 717.4 – with 4,129 new cases in the week to August 19.
