The first day of competition at the Tokyo Paralympics begins today after the spectacular opening ceremony that kicked off the events in Japan.

The Paralympics will see athletes give their chance to shine just like the Tokyo Olympics after delays due to the pandemic.

The hope and expectation is that not only will there be elite-level competition, but the organizers want the Paralympics to strengthen Japanese society and prove more inclusive.

It is the first city to host two Paralympic Games, 57 years after its first games in 1964, with 4,400 athletes in Tokyo representing 162 Paralympic Committees.

There will be 539 medals on display in 22 sports as well. We can look forward to new events in the form of badminton and para taekwondo, although kitesurfing and Sevens have been canceled since Rio 2016.

“I can’t believe we’re finally here. Many doubted that this day would happen,” said IPC President Andrew Parsons in his opening ceremony address.

“Many thought it was impossible. But thanks to the efforts of so many, the most transformative sporting event on Earth is about to begin. We want to change the whole world.”
