Police said a stranger grabbed a young girl who was playing in the street and forced her into the bush.

Officers are now chasing the culprit who escaped after taking the little girl during the traumatic daytime incident.

Sussex Police said in an appeal that they are investigating a report that a young girl was grabbed by a man on a Littlehampton street, and they are now appealing for information.

At about 5 p.m. on Monday, the girl, aged six and whose name has not been released, was playing in an open area on a street called Timberleys in Littlehampton.

The officers said that the unknown then approached her.

He allegedly forced her to go to some bush nearby, but ran away after about a minute when he was believed to have been distracted by relatives calling for the girl.

The girl was not physically harmed and she returned to her relatives nearby. She and her family are supported by specially trained officers.

The suspect is described as black, in his forties, with short dark hair, and wearing a black T-shirt with a blue/gray rain jacket.

“The motive behind this isolated incident is not clear at this time and we have been in the area seeking to establish the circumstances and contact any witnesses,” Chief Inspector John Carter and Aaron said.

“We are conducting a detailed investigation into this troubling incident, but we also confirm that at this stage there is an isolated report, and there have been no similar reports in the region or abroad recently,” he added.

“I am aware of the concern that such incidents will cause parents in the area. The investigation is underway quickly and thoroughly, and local officers are increasingly patrolling.

“Local residents should continue to take reasonable precautions to keep their children safe. If you see any suspicious behavior around children, call us on 999 immediately.”
