Kanye West filed court documents to officially change his name to Ye.

In filing for the Los Angeles Superior Court, West aims to shorten his full name – Kanye Amari West – to just Ye, without another name or surname, citing “personal reasons”. The judge will now need to approve the deposit.

He previously announced the name change in 2018, writing on Twitter that “The object is officially [sic] Known as Kanye West. I am you.”

Explaining the change in a radio interview that year, he said, “I think ‘you’ is the most used word in the Bible, and it means you in the Bible. So I’m you, I’m we, we.” He said his name “goed from Kani.” , whose name means only, to Yi only—being merely a reflection of our good, our bad, our baffling, and everything.” Ye was the title of the studio album he released that year.

West is expected to release his tenth album, Donda, this week after playing it at Soldier Field in his hometown of Chicago on Thursday. The album has been expected for weeks, ever since it held another running event at an Atlanta sports arena on July 22. He continued to work on the album in a makeshift studio and living space in the plaza.

He drew attention this week after Canadian rapper Drake sparked a long-running feud between the pair, singing Betrayal’s newly released Trippie Redd: “Forty-five, forty-four, let it go / It ain’t going to change ‘For me, it’s set in stone'” West responded by posting a short screenshot of a group text conversation that appeared to address Drake, saying, “I live for this… you’ll never recover.” I promise you.”

In February, West and his wife, Kim Kardashian West, announced that they were divorcing after nearly seven years of marriage.
