Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Leonardo says the club has rejected Real Madrid’s €160m (£137m) bid for Kylian Mbappe even though the player has made it clear he wants to leave.

The France World Cup winner, 22, joined Paris Saint-Germain from fellow Ligue 1 club Monaco for £166m in 2017 and his contract expires next summer.

Mbappe won three French Ligue 1 titles and three French Cups at the Parc des Princes.

“Yes, we said no verbally to Real,” Leonardo told RMC Sport. “No one is being held back. If someone wants to leave and our conditions are met, we’ll see.”

“The offer is a far cry from what Kylian deserves today. We also owe a portion of this money to Monaco and consider the offer to be insufficient.

“Our position has always been to keep Kylian, to extend his deal, and that has always been our goal and it always is.

“We made two important offers to Kylian: one at the level of the best players in the team two months ago, and one above these players recently. We want to prove to him that he is an important player, at the heart of the project, but not above the project.”

Mbappe has started all three of PSG’s Ligue 1 games this season, scoring in the 4-2 win over Brest on Friday.

Leonardo added: “Cylian wants to leave, it seems clear to me. If Real Madrid makes an offer, it seems clear to me … I take a position that I think is clear to everyone. If he wants to leave, we will not prevent him, but that will be on our terms.” .

“Kylian has always promised that he would not leave the club for free. That’s what he always told us.

“We have no intention of speaking with Real Madrid again. The deadline is August 31 at midnight. This is the transfer period, but we are clear on this: we want to keep him and extend his deal. But we are not going to let him go for less than we paid him, while We still owe Monaco money.”
