This week, they also shut down the Selfridge entrance on nearby Oxford Street to demonstrate against clothing production, which they claim is harmful to the environment. Protesters painted themselves and the sidewalk with a black substance to represent the oil spill.

Elsewhere, protesters in Leicester Square spent a night sticking to McDonald’s as part of a job to persuade the fast food chain to switch to an all-vegetarian menu by 2025.

Cllr Rachael Robathan, Westminster City Council Leader, said: “We fully support the right of any group to demonstrate peacefully and make their cause known. However, this kind of disruption is not only detrimental to the livelihoods of our residents and visitors, but also represents a major challenge to our businesses and cultural institutions that have suffered so badly. during the past eighteen months.

“It is critical that these protests are well managed to minimize disruption and improve access for our residents, businesses and visitors so they can feel welcome and safe in the city.”

Electric car fundraising for the founder of the group

One of the group’s founders called this week for a “mass rally” to pay for an electric car after it admitted she had been driving a diesel.

Dr Jill Bradbrook has suggested to the public that they contribute the £5,000 she would need to upgrade her car to be more environmentally friendly.

Her comment came after she admitted driving an environmentally harmful diesel because she could not afford an electric car.

A spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion said: “As Westminster Council will confirm, the £50,000 figure was a ‘service’ cost, meaning the total cost of Council services temporarily redeployed during the two-week October 2019 protests. There was no additional money to be spent by the Council. And no additional cost to taxpayers.

“120 tons of garbage was collected over a two-week period. To put that number in comparison, during the 2016-2017 London New Year celebrations, Westminster removed 85 tons of trash from just one night.

“As anyone who has participated in protests against Extinction Rebellion knows, we are anxious to get rid of ourselves and ask the rebels to respect the spaces they are in and take the trash home. Why don’t you go down and see for yourself?”
