The coroner has concluded that the award-winning BBC radio presenter died as a result of complications from the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine.

Lisa Shaw, who worked for BBC Radio Newcastle, died at the city’s Royal Victoria Hospital in May, just over three weeks after her first dose of the vaccine developed by academics at Oxford University.

The investigation heard that Shaw, 44, had been taken to hospital after doctors investigated her headache complaints and found that she had suffered a brain haemorrhage.

Karen Dilks, chief coroner at Newcastle, provided an anecdotal conclusion. “Lisa died of complications from the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine,” she said.

Shaw, referred to by her married name, Lisa Eve, during the hearing, began complaining of headaches a few days after her vaccination. She eventually visited the A&E department at Durham Hospital, where she was diagnosed with a blood clot.

She was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary where she received a number of treatments, including cutting off part of her skull to relieve pressure on her brain, but despite those efforts she died on May 21.

Her husband, Gareth Eve, attended the interrogation of other family members.

Tomo Polvicowski, a pathologist, told the coroner that Shaw was fit and healthy before receiving the vaccine. When asked about the underlying cause of a fatal clot in her brain, he said the clinical evidence “strongly supports the idea that the vaccine was indeed induced.”

“Based on the available clinical information, this appears to be the most likely explanation,” he said.

Shaw’s death came weeks after the UK Vaccines Advisory Committee restricted use of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine to those over 40, after rare reports of recipients developing unusual blood clots with low platelets. A number of other countries have imposed similar restrictions or stopped using the vaccine altogether.

The Guardian has contacted the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the body that approves vaccines and other medicines for use in the UK, for comment.

The family issued a statement saying: “This is another difficult day at a time that was devastating to us. The death of our beloved Lisa has left a terrible void in our family and in our lives.

“She was truly the most wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. We have said everything we wanted to say in public at this time and are asking to be left alone to grieve and rebuild our lives in private. Thank you.”
