Wayne Rooney denies the possibility of his former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo joining rivals Manchester City.

Wayne Rooney told talkSPORT he can’t see his former teammate and Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo move to rivals Manchester City.

The duo played 209 games together at Manchester United between 2004-2009, winning three Premier League titles and crowning the Champions League as they earned legendary status at the club.

However, it now appears increasingly likely that Ronaldo will tarnish his venerable reputation at Old Trafford, with reports emerging that he has agreed personal terms with City, and Juventus want him off his salary bill.

Rooney, who is now Derby’s director, would still be shocked to see the move, saying: “It’s an interesting move but I can’t see it.

“I think Cristiano has a very good legacy at Manchester United and I know how proud he is as a player and as a person. I can’t see it, but it’s football so you never know.”

There were seven players playing for both teams in the Premier League era, many of them top-level players, but Rooney believes Ronaldo is different from his predecessors.

“There were a few who did it but nobody at Cristiano’s level,” Rooney said. “Obviously Peter Schmeichel and Andy Cole, but I don’t really see that as an option for him.

“Financially of course he doesn’t need to do that. I think he is more likely to go to PSG.”

The former United and Everton striker was asked about a move to the rivals, as he was heavily linked with a move to Man City back in 2010.

“I think you need to do what’s right for you as a person and your family,” Rooney said. “Everyone knows that I will never play for Liverpool or Manchester City. It is clear but everyone is different.

“I think people are moving to clubs where they don’t really want to but from a financial point of view it might be the only option they have, so from some people’s point of view I might get it.

“But from my point of view that wouldn’t be an option.”
