Brexit red tape damages UK supply chain, fishing chiefs warn – ‘ridiculous’ | United Kingdom | News

Frustrated executives of seafood production companies have faced a massive shortage of staff due to the Brexit red tape. Because of the new immigration rules, many factories and companies have been unable to hire from the European Union, leaving some with up to half of their workforce missing.

Many do not even receive applications because potential workers will not be allowed into the UK.

One chief criticized the “ridiculous” measures, banning them from doing business while another pleads with politicians to excuse the fishing industry.

Scott Burgess, plant manager at Whitlink Foods in Scotland, was asked by Channel 4 News what he thought was responsible for the shortage.

He replied: “Mostly Brexit. The free movement has now been taken away, so for us, that’s a big problem.

“Even if we hired every British citizen who was available to work in the labor industry, it wouldn’t be enough. They should allow us to take in workers without all the ridiculous bureaucracy.

With the Brexit vote, Jamie Buchan, chief executive of the Scottish Seafood Association, met with Boris Johnson earlier this month to demand an exemption from post-Brexit immigration restrictions.

“The new rules have made it really difficult to absorb migrant workers,” he said.

This could lead to a shortage of what we can expect on supermarket shelves. This August. We are going towards Christmas.

Earlier this summer, supermarket shelves were left empty of common items like water after Brexit rules led to a shortage of truck drivers.

Several supermarket bosses urged the government to relax the rules as well after surveys showed the UK’s supply chain was suffering the biggest setback since the 1970s.
