“The Perfect Player” – Ronaldo’s greatest moments in the Premier League
Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus.
BBC Sport understands a move to Manchester City will not happen for the 36-year-old.
Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri confirmed that Ronaldo had “no longer had any intention” of playing for the Italian giants.
United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Ronaldo “knows we are here” during a news conference on Friday.
Ronaldo signed for Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon for £12.2 million in 2003 and scored 118 goals in 292 appearances for the club.
“He knows we’re here” – Solskjaer on Ronaldo
During the press conference early on Friday, before news emerged of United approaching, Solskjaer said he was surprised that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner wanted to end his time in Italy.
He added that Ronaldo was spoken to by his Portugal teammate Bruno Fernandes.
“I didn’t think Cristiano would leave Juventus,” Solskjaer said. “It was speculation this morning, speculation the last few days, of course.
“I know Bruno was talking to him too. He knows how we feel about him and if he’s going to move away from Juve, he knows we’re here.”
Manchester City appeared to be one of the candidates to sign the former Real Madrid player when some reports indicated that the personal terms of the external link had already been agreed between the two.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash with Arsenal, coach Pep Guardiola said: “Cristiano is a Juventus player and I can’t add anything else.
“In these three or four days left until the transfer window closes, anything can happen but, in my opinion, there are a few players – including Cristiano Ronaldo, another Messi – who decide where they will play.
“At the moment, I feel very happy with the squad we have and we will stay the same.”
On Wednesday, Juventus informed Ronaldo that they are willing to sell him during the transfer window – but only if their conditions are met by interested clubs.
“[Ronaldo] He made his contribution, saved himself, and now he leaves and life goes on.”
“Things change, it’s the law of life. Juventus remains, which is the most important thing.
“We must thank him for what he has done, also as an example among young people. But as I said, we must continue.”
According to reports, Ronaldo has informed his Juventus teammates that he is set to leave this month after two years in the 36-times Italian champions.
He then headed to the training ground on Friday morning but left before participating in the session.
A week ago, Allegri said that Ronaldo “never expressed a desire to leave Juventus, and that the player informed him that he would be staying at the Allianz Stadium”.
Ronaldo himself described media speculation about his future as a “disrespect for me as a man and as a player” in a lengthy Instagram post a few days ago.
