Man City strikers have extra motivation for Cristiano Ronaldo against Arsenal – Simon Pajkowski

Ronaldo is not on his way

A week ago, you could have laughed at Etihad because you suggested it, the day before she was venturing out and then Manchester City slammed the door hard again in a move for Cristiano Ronaldo. Having enjoyed signing after missing Harry Kane, they eventually walked away from what was on the table.

Every member of the current squad will know though that Ronaldo and Kane are at the level Pep Guardiola wants in front of goal, or that City haven’t taken long to look for their signature. Even if the club does not have anyone else present in this transfer window, the coach’s standards will not be lowered and if the current team cannot rise to face them, he will make sure to bring in someone who can.

Having defeated Spurs, City enjoyed themselves against a dreary Norwich side: Gabriel Jesus had three passes from the wing, while Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez came off the bench to score.

When everyone on the team sets out to prove a point, Guardiola is at his happiest. The news that Ronaldo will not now come to the federation gives players a respite on the one hand, but also challenges them to prove their employers wrong for believing that more reinforcements are needed.

The absence of Kevin De Bruyne leaves free space in the midfield once again for anyone to choose.

Jack Grealish showed some promise there at Spurs but looked more comfortable on the left against Norwich with Bernardo Silva entering and easily controlling the action alongside Ilkay Gundogan. Bernardo appears to be the most obvious option, although he is also likely to leave the club before the transfer window closes, so it cannot be seen as a long-term solution.

Belgium’s decision not to call up De Bruyne for their matches will be a relief at the federation, although there is still the important issue of making sure the midfielder is completely over his injury and can start to play a role in City’s season.

In two matches in the Premier League, Arsenal conceded four goals and did not score any of them.

At some point, they will find the network. At some point, they will find a clean sheet. And in retrospect, City may have been the team to turn their luck against.

This has largely disappeared under Guardiola’s reign, as they have built a reputation for ruthlessly beating anyone who comes their way no matter the circumstances.

City need to aim for all of their home matches if they want to win the league – especially against teams that cannot be considered title contenders. Guardiola and his team cannot give his longtime assistant Mikel Arteta any sympathy as he returns to the federation under great pressure to turn things around.

Cole Palmer made his Premier League debut from the bench at the weekend, and while the level of contenders wasn’t the highest, he’ll be up against the 19-year-old who looked comfortable on the ball and in City’s star-studded squad.

It is expected to be Palmer’s first appearance this season in Guardiola’s squad, and his confidence will be even higher after the FA Cup winning role in the middle of the week and the England Under-21 squad. Palmer won’t be given minutes for it, but he did enough last week to earn another chance if she appeared against Arsenal.
