Paralympic highlights: Kadeena Cox holds exciting gold on the racetrack

British cyclist Neil Vaci broke his own world record en route to gold at the Paralympic Games on Saturday – shortly before his wife, Laura, repeated the feat at the Izu Velodrome in Tokyo.

Neil and pilot Matt Rotherham set a new best time in the B men’s 1,000-time trial, flying more than a second off the old record and setting a new target of 58,038.

The duo fended off competition from fellow Briton James Paul and Lewis Stewart to claim his second gold medal at the Paralympic Games, following his recent success in London 2012 alongside Barney Storey.

Soon, he was cheering his wife Laura to success in the B 3000m chase alongside pilot Corrine Hall.

The women also set their new best time ever as they qualified for the final, before heading home in a gold-medal duel to beat Irish pair Katie George Dunleavy and Eve McChrystal by nearly two seconds.

After their success, Neil said, “For us both to win the gold medal together and also break the world record is something beyond our dreams.”

The Fachies’ victories were part of a day of great success for British athletes on the fourth day of the Games.

Also winning the gold on the track was a C1-5 750m trio from a mixed team made up of Jodi Conde, Kadena Cox and Jaco van Gas, the latter of whom also won another gold in the 3000m individual and also a bronze in the C1-3 1000m time trial.

The trio kept their noses ahead in a heated battle with China, eventually outsmarting their opponents by 0.106sec.

Meanwhile, off the track, weightlifter Mickey Yul won the bronze medal in the men’s 72kg category, and Tom Matthews and Paul Karabardak came in third in two separate table tennis rankings.

It was heartbreaking for Alison Bisgood and guide Nikki Bartlett who finished fourth in the women’s PTVI triathlon, while Fran Brown also finished out of medals after swimming, cycling and running in the PT2 event.

In the men’s PTVI triathlon, a broken bike series spoiled Dave Ellis and Luke Pollard’s medal chances.

The results leave GB in second place in the table as of 7.45 a.m. Saturday, with 36 medals – 12 of them gold.
