England smashed India’s resistance to rush to victory by innings and 76 times in the third Test at Headingley and tied the series at 1-1.
Ole Robinson expertly used the second new ball on the morning of Day 4 to claim a 5-65 lead and speed India up 278 times.
After India threatened to make things difficult for England by moving to 215-2 on day three, Robinson knocked out both batsmen for the night.
Cheteshwar Pujara was not playing a stroke for 91 before Virat Kohli, who had already flipped from behind, slipped for the first time for 55.
It was the start of India losing their last eight points and wickets at 63 throws – in one stage they lost three for two – as the match was more than 15 minutes before lunch.
She awarded Joe Root a record 27th England Test win as a captain, in front of his home crowd.
The fourth test begins at The Oval on Thursday, with the series wrapping up at Old Trafford from September 10.
Series primed after England fight, England v India: Virat Kohli beats Oli Robinson to Joe Root on slip
This score puts the series in a perplexing position, not only in the scores table, but because of how the fortunes of these aspects are reflected.
England were largely saved from the rain in their first Test tie at Trent Bridge, then suffered a devastating defeat on the final day in the second game at Lords.
However, here they pushed India to 78 after losing the lottery and accumulated 432 to move on to what was their first win in eight Tests.
And while India hinted at ramping up Headingley’s famous comeback on Friday, it’s always been a fiction – no team has canceled such a massive first-round deficit to win the Test.
All England selection decisions were correct. Haseeb Hamid and Dawid Malan ran, while Craig Overton was affected by the ball. Hosts may also have Mark Wood and Chris Woakes available for The Oval.
For the first time in this series, the problems are for India.
Robinson roars on Headingley’s return
Robinson, the Sussex tailor, is playing only his fourth Test, but he has become a staple of England’s attack despite the controversy over the offensive history tweets that plagued his debut in June.
He has a history at Headingley, too. He played 10 games for Yorkshire in 2013 and 2014, only to be sacked for “a number of unprofessional actions”, which he attributed to his absence at his home in Kent.
Here, on his return as an international bowler, Robinson was brilliant in his use of the crucial new ball, delighting the raucous fans who knew the importance of the opening hour.
He was let down by Pujara’s rule on the fourth day of the day when he left an indoor bird that appeared to be struck by a stump.
England thought they had a vital share of Kohli when he was handed over from James Anderson – the India captain even started to leave – only for revision to show he had clipped his pads with his racket.
However, with a bouncing and seam motion, he fenced it to the root, then the frantic Rishabh Pant headed for the third slip. Robinson completed his second pentathlon when Ishant Sharma was arrested.
In between, Anderson captured the edge of Ajinkia Rahan, Moin Ali tossed the ball at Mohamed El Shamy, and Overton took the last two wickets to finish 3-47.
They are back with double the force”—what they said, Root praises “excellent” England after India swept aside
England captain Joe Root on TMS: “Going back in the costumes we did is the most impressive thing. The bowling on day one was great, then the way the opening game played and the great partnerships we had.
“India played exceptionally yesterday and made hard work for us, but those wickets were the product of the hard work we put in yesterday. We were good at putting pressure on control of the game.”
English bowler James Anderson on Sky Sports: “We’re missing a few bowlers which shows the depth we have. We’re missing the likes of Broad, Archer and Woakes – guys who have done a great job for us over the last few years – so guys come and keep performing. It shows the depth we have.”
India captain Virat Kohli on TMS: “We were always up against since the first rounds, there wasn’t enough practice on the board and it’s very difficult to get back into the game. Their consistency with the ball this morning put us under a lot of pressure Robinson threw a lot in England and swing the ball in Both directions, so in these conditions it was a real find for them. ”
Ebony Rainford-Brent, former England hitter on TMS: “The main thing is how England bounced back. I saw the loss at Lords and wondered if it would make a mental impact but they came back with double the force.”
