Pen Farthing: a struggle between radio guests on the topic of ‘pets and people’

A former Royal Marine has landed safely in the UK after fleeing Afghanistan with cats and rescue dogs.

Ben Farthing is one of the last Britons to pull out of the South Asian country after the Taliban seized power with the United States set to withdraw its troops on Tuesday.

Pen supporter Dominic Dyer confirmed to the Mirror that Pen has now landed again in the UK and all animals are safe.

The Daily Mail reported that he left Heathrow shortly after arriving to be reunited with his wife in Norway.

British Airways’ last flight is for civilians who departed before his charter plane, and any other flights will be a mix of military and civilian personnel.

He videotaped his wife, Kisa Markus, from inside Kabul airport on Friday to tell her he had managed to cross with the animals – hours after the terrorist attack.

But he was “devastated” after his Afghan workers were prevented from leaving and now faces an uncertain future.

Ben’s flight is delayed and he faces a nervous wait with the animals from the Nawzad Rescue Shelter.

Qaisah said she was relieved that he arrived at the airport in the wake of the ISIS suicide bombing that killed 170 Afghans and 13 American soldiers.

But she said she “won’t celebrate until he arrives.”

Ben said he was turned away on Thursday after a change in documentation rules

She told The Mail on Friday night: ‘The second I saw him peacefully inside [the airport]…you can imagine. I know Pen had a very difficult choice. He faced the same choice when he was inside the airport with his staff and their families on Thursday and animals and staff were not allowed to pass.

“So, he went back to the compound to make sure everyone was safe and to discuss what to do with them. They decided he would go to the airport again with the dogs.

“He felt devastated to leave his staff, but he knew that by removing both the dogs and himself, he would remove two great dangerous factors.”

He raised £200,000 to rent a plane (

British forces helped load Ben’s animals onto a plane in Kabul on Friday after the charity’s founder raised more than £200,000 to charter a plane for the animal rescue operation, according to reports.

The Ministry of Defense is said to have confirmed that the British Armed Forces assisted the group at the airport.

Kisa, 30, said she cried when she left Kabul without her animals on a nearly empty plane last week.

He faced criticism from British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace (

Bin claimed on social media that his team and their rescue animals were able to reach Kabul airport on Thursday, but were only “turned away” due to changes in paperwork rules made by the US a few hours ago.

British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said efforts to rescue Ben and his animals had “taken a lot of time” for his top commanders “when the focus should be on dealing with the humanitarian crisis”.

In a series of tweets, he then directed criticism of his statements from Benn’s supporters, in which he condemned “bullying, lies, and threatening behavior” towards Defense Department employees.

Ben has previously clashed with Mr. Wallace over his refusal to allow him, his animals, and his staff to be evacuated.

He tweeted: “You picked the wrong person to step back. I served 22 years in the Royal Marines. We don’t give up.”
