US officials confirmed that a drone destroyed a car carrying a “large amount of explosive materials” on its way to Kabul airport.

A military official said Sunday’s strike caused “large secondary explosions”.

He added, “Today, US military forces carried out a self-defense drone strike on a vehicle in Kabul, eliminating an imminent threat of ISIS-K on Hamad Karzai International Airport.

“We are confident that we have successfully achieved the goal.

“We are assessing the potential for civilian casualties, although there are no indications at this time. We remain alert to potential future threats.”

It is the second air strike by the United States on the militant group, which it said carried out a suicide bombing on Thursday that killed 13 of its members and dozens of Afghans.

There were also reports of an explosion in a house near the airport in the Afghan capital, but it is not clear if this was linked to the drone strike.

The incidents come shortly after Joe Biden warned that another terrorist attack at Kabul airport was “highly likely within the next 24-36 hours” – and vowed more US airstrikes against ISIS targets in Khorasan.

Meanwhile, the United States is winding up its historic airlift that has seen tens of thousands evacuated from Kabul International Airport, which has been the scene of much of the chaos that has engulfed the Afghan capital since the Taliban took control two weeks ago.

Military cargo planes continued their flight to the airport on Sunday, ahead of President Joe Biden’s deadline earlier Tuesday to withdraw all troops from America’s longest war.

However, the Afghans remaining in the country are concerned that the Taliban will return to their former oppressive rule.
