Edinson Cavani shirt number confirmed for Manchester United against Wolves ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo transfer

Edinson Cavani will wear the number 7 shirt for Manchester United if he comes off the bench against Wolverhampton.

Amid the impending return of Cristiano Ronaldo – after his impressive transformation on Friday afternoon – there has been widespread debate over which player will get the coveted jersey of the term.

Cavani was of course number 7 at Old Trafford and beyond last season and the Uruguayan has decided to extend his stay in the UK for another 12 months this summer.

With that said, it was widely expected that he would wear the same team number, again – especially after he held up competition for England striker Jadon Sancho in this regard.

However, Ronaldo’s high profile arrival and the enormous marketing potential that comes with that has ignited an entirely different argument for United’s numbers.

According to the rules of the Premier League, it was initially thought that, in any case, Ronaldo would not be given his preferred option on the grounds that 7 were already assigned to Cavani.

A loophole has emerged in this regard, though, because the club could ask the Premier League for a special exemption. This could still happen but he’s still wearing the vs Wolves number.

Cavani took extra leave over his Copa America exploits, and this afternoon, the forward was back in the United squad for the first time.

He was included on the bench where Sancho and Raphael Varane made their first starts for the club, and his name is imprinted next to the number 7.
