US Moves Humanitarian Aid to Haiti After Deadly Earthquake

[ad_1]

The United States is now airlifting food, fabrics and other supplies to areas hard hit by the August 14 earthquake in Haiti, the Associated Press reports.

Why it matters: Rapid access to resources for remote communities made vulnerable by the earthquake is the focus of the $32 million US relief effort. The aid effort will be coordinated with the many humanitarian organizations already in the country.

Troops under the direction of Miami-based United States Southern Command have delivered about 265,000 pounds of relief supplies, according to the Associated Press.

In numbers: The 7.2-magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,200 people and injured 12,000.

What they say: “We’re just trying to get as much material as possible to the hardest-hit areas as quickly as we can. If you do that, the frustration level goes down,” Tim Callahan, USAID disaster response team leader, told The Associated Press.

“People need food, water, tents and fabrics,” said Wilkins Sanon of the Mission of Hope Foundation. “It’s too bad now.”
