“We expect to be offered a free upgrade to all eligible devices by mid-2022.”

Microsoft has confirmed the release date of Windows 11, which will be available for download from October 5th.

If you’re a qualified Windows 10 owner, you’ll be able to upgrade for free, although Microsoft uses “intelligence models that take into account hardware eligibility, reliability metrics, device age, and other factors” to determine exactly when your device is required to upgrade.

“We anticipate that a free upgrade to Windows 11 will be offered to all eligible devices by mid-2022,” Microsoft explained. “If you have a Windows 10 PC that is eligible for the upgrade, Windows Update will let you know when it’s available. You can also check to see if Windows 11 is ready for your device by going to Settings > Windows Update and selecting Check for updates.”

In a list of 11 “features” of Windows 11, Microsoft said the upgraded operating system was, inevitably, the best yet for gaming. Microsoft writes that it “unleashes the full potential of your system’s hardware with technology such as DirectX12 Ultimate, DirectStorage, and Auto HDR.” It also of course allows you to sign up for Xbox Game Pass for PC.

Other notable features include a new design, content saved to the cloud in the Start menu, Snap layouts, Microsoft Teams built into the taskbar and widgets, many accessibility improvements, and an improved Microsoft Store.

If you don’t upgrade, Windows 10 will continue to be supported until October 14, 2025.
