Fariba Hafeezy couldn’t sleep last night, and was so excited to see her mother, Liloma, 79, again.

Vereba ran towards her mother while Liloma was waiting outside the hotel where she had been in quarantine for 10 days since her return from Kabul.

While they were cuddling, both women were crying and kissing each other’s faces. Then I fainted on Liloma.

“I think it was the emotion that I had,” Ferreba says. “The sense of relief and happiness, it all came together and I felt disoriented.”

Both have lived in the UK for 21 years. The family moved to England from Afghanistan after Phiriba’s father received threats from the Taliban, and settled in Coventry.

In July, Liloma traveled to Kabul for a family funeral. As the Taliban progressed, she knew she had to get out. Her flights were constantly canceled, but she was determined to escape.

When Liloma arrived at the Kabul airport about two weeks ago, she saw chaos.

She was pushed and fainted. Her nephew who lives in Afghanistan carried her through the crowds.

“He made his way through the crowd, trying to get to the barricade as fast as he could, and got hurt and pushed aside,” Ferreba says.

“He went through all these dangers to reach the barrier.

“By the time he arrived, my mother was completely unconscious.”

Fariba’s cousin had to leave Liloma, in that case, with the troops at the entrance to the airport.

Vereba didn’t know if her mother had woken up or if she was still taking life-saving medications with her.

Liluma must be taking blood thinners and also has diabetes. For the next 12 hours, Feriba heard nothing, unsure whether her mother had managed to board a plane to safety.

Liloma does not have a cell phone, so Feriba had no way of contacting her.

After that, Fereba received a call from an unknown number. On the other end of the phone was Sayed Attay. He had met Liloma at Dubai Airport – they were both traveling on a flight from Kabul and were heading to London.

“He did everything for me, whatever was needed, whether it was food or drink,” Fariba translates for her mother, who speaks only Dari.

“He was constantly taking care of me, carrying my luggage and bags, taking care of me, and I owed him constantly.

“It was like a miracle to me.”

Mr. Ataye also feared he would be stuck in Afghanistan after traveling there to visit his father, who has contracted COVID-19.

His father died after they were reunited. Now, Mr Attaye is looking forward to returning to his home in Newcastle to see his wife and two young children again.

Fereba says she can’t find the right words to describe how grateful she is to Mr. Attayee for taking care of her mother on their trip home.

“I will do everything I can, from now until I die, to repay the kindness, generosity, love and affection I showed my mother,” she said to Mr. Attay.

But Mr. Atayay says it was his duty to help Liloma.

“We are human beings, we have to help each other. She is like my mother. She is from Afghanistan.”

During the hotel quarantine, after their return to the UK, Mr Attaye and Liluma continued to meet and chat when they were allowed breaks from exercise.

Mr. Ataiy hopes that their friendship will continue and that their families will spend time together.

“I will bring my family to your house and we will make large quantities of Afghan food,” he told Fereba.

Agree: “feast”.
