Microsoft today announced its plans to launch Windows 11 on October 5th, inviting us into a world of exciting new features like rounded corners and a new virtual desktop background. With the advent of the new, named versions of Windows, 11 seem to be a smaller upgrade from, say, Windows 3.1 to Windows 95, or from Window 8 to not having a computer at all. However, it has some useful features for gaming. And it will come out as a free upgrade of 10, if you want it.
Aaron Woodman, a Microsoft blogger, explained that “the free upgrade to Windows 11 begins on October 5th and will be phased and measured with a focus on quality.” “After learning tremendously from Windows 10, we want to make sure that we give you the best possible experience. This means that new eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first. The upgrade will then roll out over time to devices in the market based on intelligence models that consider hardware eligibility. and reliability metrics, device life, and other factors that affect the upgrade experience. We expect that a free upgrade will be offered to all eligible devices to Windows 11 by mid-2022.”
He is a big fan of the phrase “enormous learning”. Just a tremendous learning, my friend. But yes, when Microsoft considers your PC eligible, Windows Update will let you know.
Windows 11 has different hardware requirements, particularly in requiring the Trusted Platform Module 2.0 chip. When I tried MS’s doodad app that checks if your computer can run Windows 11, I got a huge refusal (although I understand that messing with your BIOS can be fruitful). MS has since updated the minimum system requirements, and plans to update the checker. I’m still not in a hurry to switch. I’m not sure how much Windows 11 will help me until I buy new hardware.
One of the main gaming features of the W11 is Auto HDR. As seen in the new Xbox, it can add HDR support for older games (DX11 and above) that don’t support having great monitors. I don’t own an HDR monitor nor do I intend to buy one, but maybe I will someday? Microsoft is also touting faster load times thanks to its DirectStorage technology, although it will arrive in Windows 10 less quickly as well. Ah, I probably won’t switch until I get a new computer. Win10 works well enough for me.
It looks like the built-in Android app support won’t be on either. “We look forward to continuing our journey of bringing Android apps to Windows 11 and the Microsoft Store through our collaboration with Amazon and Intel; this will begin with a preview for Windows Insiders over the coming months,” Woodman said.
Great reactions to the online Photoshop tutorial culture of the ’90s.
Our James has been won over with Windows 11’s new user interface, Mind. “I especially like the completely modified Start menu, which looks a lot better for customizations without all the screen tiles that Windows has pushed since Windows 8,” he said.
I’ll admit that I love how the default background looks like the wallpapers I used on LiteStep in, like, 1998.
Microsoft plans to support Windows 10 until October 14, 2025, so you won’t be immediately cut off from updates if you choose not to upgrade. But eventually, years later, Windows 10 will likely become less secure to use thanks to unpatched vulnerabilities. You know how it only takes 13 seconds to install a new Windows XP connected to the internet to start printing porn and then launch bots that make and sell NFTs for webcam images that look surprised at the Epson Stylus Color 300’s streaming obscenity.
