Piers Morgan acquitted by Ofcom over criticism of Meghan Markle’s Oprah interview

Piers Morgan did not break broadcast law when he made negative comments about the Duchess of Sussex’s interview with Oprah Winfrey, Ofcom ruled.

Morgan’s remarks about Good Morning Britain – which eventually led to his resignation from the show – attracted a record 57,000 complaints to Ofcom, including one from the Duchess herself.

In an interview with Oprah, the Duchess said she had experienced suicidal thoughts. But Morgan told viewers the next day: “I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she said. Meghan Markle – I wouldn’t believe it if you read me the weather report.”

The watchdog ruled that the ITV show did not break the broadcast law, even though Morgan’s comments could have been “hurtful and insulting”, as he was entitled to free speech.

“Potentially harmful and offensive to viewers”

An Ofcom spokesperson said: “This was a carefully balanced decision.

Morgan’s comments were potentially harmful and offensive to viewers, and we are aware of the strong public reaction to them.

But we also took full account of freedom of expression. Under our rules, broadcasters could include controversial opinions as part of a legitimate public interest debate, and Mr. Morgan’s strong challenge from other contributors provided important context for viewers.

“However, we have reminded ITV to pay more attention to discussing content around mental health and suicide in the future. ITV may consider using timely warnings or flagging support services to ensure viewers are properly protected.”

shutout

Morgan said Ofcom’s ruling was a “resounding victory”.

He tweeted: “I am delighted that Ofcom has upheld my right not to believe the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s incendiary allegations against Oprah Winfrey, many of which have been proven untrue. This is a resounding victory for free speech and a resounding defeat for Princess Pinocchio. Will I get my job back?”

Morgan’s comments were the most complaining moment in Ofcom history.

The Duchess contacted ITV in person to say Morgan’s stance could be harmful to others with mental health issues.

Morgan was ordered by ITV chiefs to apologize. He refused and quit the program.
