The fire started in the attic of a building near the main train station before quickly spreading to nearby properties. Dozens of firefighters are battling to control the flames – several hours after they rushed to the scene. “The situation is critical. The fires are burning and we are trying to create a hail of hoses, but it is very difficult to reach them at this altitude,” said local fire chief Agateno Carolo.

Police believe that a welder who was working in a safe may have caused the fire by mistake.

This sent clouds of thick black smoke high into the Turin skyline.

Local media reported that the fire caused explosions in some of the gas tanks, which quickly spread to other buildings.

Five people were reported injured, but none were seriously injured.

Two police officers and a worker in the building were reported to have sustained minor burns and injuries.

Nearby shops were also evacuated.

The fire in the Italian city comes less than a week after a massive fire destroyed a luxury apartment building in neighboring Milan.

Last Sunday, the 20-story skyscraper caught fire, and the fire spread to the entire structure within minutes.

It is believed that about 70 families lived in the apartment block.

Local reports said firefighters had to break down doors, apartment by apartment, to get residents out.

Milan Mayor Beppe Sala said at the time: “At the moment we have no reports of casualties or injuries.

“We are optimistic about the fact that there has been plenty of time for everyone to get out but until the control is done we can’t be sure.”
