David Beckham stood out as he often does when he came to Soccer Aid 2021 at the Etihad Stadium, but Inter Miami coach Phil Neville wishes he stayed in Florida.

Soccer Aid: David Beckham arrives at the Etihad Stadium

David Beckham took center stage at Soccer Aid 2021 despite not tying his boots.

The former Manchester United star will be seen at the Etihad Stadium where the fundraising event is being held for the fourth year in a row.

Beckham, himself a UNICEF ambassador, wore a black suit with a white shirt and red tie.

As is often the case, the England legend received huge acclaim when he appeared on the big screen at The Etihad.

But his presence in England will make Phil Neville a little nervous.

Beckham owns Inter Miami in Major League Soccer these days, and earlier this year he named Neville, his former teammate, as head coach.

The Florida-based team has added the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Blaise Matuidi as they aim to make a rapid impact across the Atlantic.

Neville joked that he did not want Beckham to leave Miami because of the positive impact he has had in and around the club.

He admits that the temptation to play alongside Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes was a big reason he volunteered.

He said, “This is all about raising money for UNICEF, let’s be really clear!

“There is nothing else good about Gary Neville playing football. If you watched me play, I was 36 and I am now 46! I have done it many times over the past 10 years and it is always for reasons like this.

“The work that UNICEF does around the world is out of scale. He was one of the great partners of Manchester United when I was there, we would have dinner every year.

“It’s the 10th year of the Soccer Aid initiative and partnership with UNICEF who are doing incredible, much-needed work that the government is not doing, and being given by this wonderful charity.

“And that is a huge positive that makes it so worth it for me to come and play. The work done over the years with Soccer Aid and UNICEF is fantastic.

“I’ve always watched it but never thought I’d want to play in it. I was finally persuaded because it means I can play in a team with Rooney and Scholes again, and hopefully that means I’m on the winning team.”
