Emma Raducanu produced two perfect sets of tennis to reach the US Open fourth round and a potential date with No. 1 Ashleigh Barty
Emma Radocano dazzled at the US Open with a glamorous tennis display to dismantle Spain’s Sarah Sorribes Tormo 6-0, 6-1 as the young woman reached the fourth round in dramatic fashion on Saturday.
It’s only been two months since the 18-year-old stepped into the spotlight with her stunning run to the fourth round of Wimbledon, and Radocano equaled her performance with another sparkling performance against a player who ranked 109th above her in the world rankings. .
Raducanu has now won 14 of her last 15 matches since her first match after Wimbledon in San Jose a month ago, including six at Flushing Meadows, with a potential showdown against world number 1 Ashleigh Barty on Monday looming.
“I’ve been playing very well and I know Sarah is a very tough opponent,” Raducanu told Amazon Prime. “She doesn’t do anything wrong, so you have to be in your game at every point.
“I had to work hard and there were some really long matches that could have gone either way, so I’m really happy that I was able to keep it and stay in it and win in the end.”
The teenage girl seemed unmoved by the whirlwind around her, and said, “I have a great team around, a great team here, so we stick to the same routine.
“It’s been two weeks in New York now and in week three. I never thought I’d be here, but I’m so excited.”
The British teen celebrates her grueling performance against Sorribes Tormo on Court 10
Raducanu had yet to drop a set in the qualifying or main draw, and the talented youngster was brilliant in both attack and defense once again with some amazing tennis, edging out the Sorribes Tormo match.
The Spaniard is one of the 2021 players who won her first WTA title earlier this year in Guadalajara and racked up 30 Tour wins, with the majority attending on the hard courts.
Her results also include a famous victory over Barty in the Olympics, but Radocano put Clinic in the first set to beat her opponent in 33 minutes, winning 89 percent of the first serve points, as well as winning eight.
Soribis Tormo had her head in her hands by the time Radocano won her ninth game in a row and there was more misery for the 24-year-old as the Britons strayed from perfection in one match.
The Spaniard dug deep to avoid the dreaded double bread, but Radocano quickly pulled her out of her agony by submitting her in the next game to complete a 69-minute professional lesson.
Ranked outside the top 350 in June and never facing the top 100, Raducanu is now poised to break that feat herself.
It was her seventh win from nine matches against players inside three figures, and she is likely to earn a crack at her best Barty after that should the Australian beat Shelby Rogers later.
