The eagerly awaited rematch between Auch Warrington and Mauricio Lara ended in a short-lived technical draw in Leeds on Saturday night.
After a great opening round and a half, Lara sustained a terrible wound just above his left eye during an accidental head-on collision.
The Mexican received treatment in his corner after the second round, but was deemed unfit to continue the match by the ringside doctor, and referee Steve Gray canceled the match.
As there were fewer than four rounds completed, a decision was not possible and the match was awarded a technical draw.
It was a vastly opposite end to what was shaping up to be an unforgettable night in Yorkshire, as more than 20,000 fans turned out to cheer on home-favorite Warrington in a fantastic setting at Headingley Stadium in Leeds that reached a fever pitch while pricking their spines. walking ring.
The former FIFA featherweight champion was looking to avenge his first shock defeat of his career which came against previously unknown Lara in London in February – a result that is one of the biggest upsets seen in the British boxing ring in recent years.

An encouraging start to action, Warrington marked Lara with an early sharp set including a penetrating right hand and providing an infinitely better start than she had seven months ago, and a tighter defense to avoid his opponent’s big power.
Round two was a lively affair with Lara chasing his front foot and looking to let go of his hands, with Warrington defending well and trying to react sharply whenever possible, with the duo hitting their heads.
The cut wasn’t too bad at first, but it quickly opened up and became a huge wound by the time he got back into his corner.
“I’m totally devastated,” Warrington said on DAZN after the fight stopped.
“All those people who paid their hard-earned money, wanted to see me get redeemed tonight.
“These things happen. It’s the first time something’s been so serious. I thought I opened it with a punch in the first round. I’m totally devastated.
After the first round I thought, ‘f**k me, how did I get knocked down, how did I get eliminated? “
“Obviously we had a game plan to do it in a slightly more defensive way. But I was happy.
“With this crowd here, I felt the temptation and the passion to step into a bit of junk, and do a performance.”
When asked if he wanted to meet Lara again, Warrington insisted, “I want to clear this page to clean it up.”
Promoter Eddie Hearn was similarly disappointed with the result after feeling that Warrington had started very well and would go on to win, but conceded there was no way Lara could continue.
With ‘The Leeds Warrior’ only having two rounds under his belt and looking in perfect condition, Hearn expressed a desire to get him back in the ring quickly, with other options set because Lara will need time to recover before a potential third. bout in early 2022.
“I’d like to get Josh Warrington back in the ring ASAP,” Hearn said.
“He’s new, he did two rounds tonight. I don’t know where that will be, but this cut will take months to heal.
“Lara will be out for six months and I would like to see Warrington back in the ring. If possible, we will try to fight that third fight early next year.
“It will always be a massive fight.”
Hearn was tested about a potential rematch between Warrington and Kid Galahad, who was on analytical duties at Leeds and seemed very receptive to the idea of a June 2019 rematch, when he challenged Warrington’s IBF title but lost by a split decision.
In the co-main event of the night, Ireland’s Katie Taylor retained her spot as the undisputed and undefeated lightweight champion after successfully defending the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring belts with a comfortable points win over a mandatory and former IBF. Jennifer Hahn from USA.
Meanwhile, Connor Bean cut a distance with welterweight Adrien Granados, before easily beating the judges’ scorecards.
The most impressive performance of the night without a doubt came from Doncaster’s Maxi Hughes, who put in a perfect bid for the IBO world lightweight title from Mexican Jovanni Straffon.
Ibani Bridges also narrowly beat France’s Miley Ganglove, while Hobby Price shrugged Zahid Hussain aside to claim the IBO International Bantam Heavyweight title in only his sixth professional competition.
There were also wins for Jack Batson, Brandon Stansfield and Malley Wright.
