Breaking news: Shastri tests positive

India coach, Ravi Shastri, has tested positive for Covid. Lawrence Booth of the Mail and Wisden said he will go into isolation on Twitter, as well as three other members of staff in back rooms “as a precaution.” All Indian players tested negative after two lateral flow tests. All the best to Shastri for a speedy recovery.

Preamble: Time of Crisis (again)

Good morning everyone and welcome to the fourth day of the oval exam, which now seems more important than the third day. India is already 171 ahead, with seven wickets remaining. If Virat Kohli and one or two others are a hit, they could knock England out of the series. But if the players respond, we might be in the kind of ending that requires Ben Stokes and Jack Leach.

England passed yesterday when they were at the top: the problem was, it only lasted for one. Ole Robinson’s double penetration with the new ball was the only blast of sunshine on a long day’s trip in bad light. Rohit Sharma was so good that he finally did his first overseas test hundred at a time when his team really needed him. Come the hour, come tons.
