Doctors in Israel have succeeded in separating two 1-year-old girls who are joined at the back of the head.

Paramedics at the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba took 12 hours to perform the operation.

It involved a skull reconstruction and scalp grafting and followed months of planning by experts from Israel and abroad, including a 3D virtual reality model simulation of the twins.

The rare separation surgery is believed to have been performed 20 times worldwide.

But after a successful day in the theater, the girls were finally able to see each other for the first time.

Video footage from the hospital shows the sisters lying happily in their bed with bandages around their heads.

Their names have not been revealed.

“They are recovering well. They are breathing and eating on their own,” Eldad Silberstein, head of the hospital’s plastic surgery department, told Israel’s Channel 12.

Dr Awas Gilani, a pediatric neurosurgeon at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, who also participated, added: “It has gone very well and I am happy with how well the whole team has gone, it is an excellent team here and it has been a real pleasure to be a part of it.” .
