Liverpool student may be carrying evidence of brutal murder in the alleys

Police have launched a new appeal for information about the murder of a mentally ill woman whose mutilated body was found in an alleyway north of Liverpool.

Dog walkers found Susan Kelly’s body on September 2, 2000, in an alley off Blessington Road, Anfield. The 38-year-old sustained multiple injuries.

A man was charged with the murder of Susan in 2003, when a court learned that her throat had been cut with a small piece of pottery.

But the case was dismissed before the end of the trial by order of Judge Douglas Brown.

Speaking last year to mark the 20th anniversary of the murder, Susan’s mother Cathy Kelly attached importance to the boy who may have witnessed her daughter’s death.

Ms Kelly, of Bottle, said that the day after her daughter’s body was found, she visited the crime scene and spoke to a group of sex workers who stood nearby.

One sex worker suggested that her 12-year-old son might have information about what happened. Ms. Kelly said the boy described a dispute between a man and a number of women.

She said, “He heard a lot of women arguing, and women crying on entering. The next thing a companion said ‘You just saw her, didn’t you?'” This is what will happen to you if you don’t shut your mouth.”

Ms Kelly said the boy appeared terrified and would not speak directly to the police, but investigators were told what he had said and made efforts to try to track down the crying women.

Ms Kelly told ECHO she remembered seeing a report on television about the discovery of a woman’s body at Anfield.

Then her relatives came to her house and told her that the victim was her daughter.

She said, “Next thing there was a knock on the door and it was Bill (Susan’s brother) and his wife. I said ‘Oh, it’s not like you’re calling this late.'”

“He told me to sit down, Mom. I knew right away that something was wrong. He said ‘Have you been watching TV?'” ” I said yes?”

He said: Have you seen the news? As soon as the news was mentioned, I knew. I said “No, it wasn’t her,” he said.

Susan grew up in Leatherland, went to Maple Fletcher College and aspired to one day work with people with disabilities.

She entered into an established relationship and gave birth to a child in 1982.

Susan was a devoted mother until her partner was involved in drug crimes. Suzanne’s mother told the European Community Humanitarian Office that her daughter’s mental health began to deteriorate after a group of violent criminals broke into her apartment in search of drugs and cash.

After the ordeal, Ms. Kelly said, Susan was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and entered into a series of chaotic and dysfunctional relationships with other men.

Ms. Kelly said her daughter became addicted to drugs and became involved in sex work.

The police have now issued a new appeal for information on the case.

Detective Director Richie Salter said: “Time is not an obstacle to bringing someone to justice.

“I would urge anyone with information on the murder of Susan Kelly who has not already spoken to the police to come forward and speak to us.”
