Mercedes reveals impressive EQE specs ahead of EV global launch

[ad_1]

Ahead of the 2021 IAA Mobility conference on September 7, Mercedes has revealed some of the specifications technical drivers can expect from its upcoming EQE electric sedan.

The all-electric car is the second model to be based on the new premium-class electrical engineering, following the launch of the luxury Mercedes EQS sedan in April, and while it bears many similarities to its bigger sister, the EQE will arrive as an entirely different electric offering.

For starters, its interior and exterior proportions make the EQE a more sporty-looking car. It’s more compact than the EQS, with a 90mm shorter wheelbase and a body more comparable to the current CLS line.

Like the latter, the EQE has not a tailgate but a fixed rear window and boot lid, which Mercedes says allows it to boast interior space beyond even the current E-Class.

The EQE will also have a 90 kWh battery, giving the car up to 660 kilometers (about 410 miles) of range.

That’s shy of the 780km EQS figure, although it’s still an impressive range to drive given the lower numbers offered by comparable EVs like the Audi e-tron GT (475 km/295 miles) or BMW i4 (590 km/365 miles) .

Like the EQS, the EQE will offer drivers the ability to activate entirely new vehicle functions via over-the-air (OTA) updates in many regions as well.

At launch, the brand says that features such as the “Roaring Pulse” sound experience, various digital lighting modes and mini-games will be available for download.

While it’s not entirely clear at this point, we also assume that this OTA compatibility may give the EQE more range updates in the future, in a similar way to recharging the new Volvo C40.

That’s what’s inside

It’s the internal EQE’s bells and whistles, though, that bears the most resemblance to the EQS—which is great, given our experience driving the latter.

Like its luxury sibling, the EQE has the optional extras of the brand’s market-leading MBUX Hyperscreen, which combines three curved screens under a single glass cover that includes the dashboard.

This means, in addition to the driver, the front passenger gets their own display and control area as well, which (in Europe, at least) also allows them to watch dynamic content on the go.

What’s more, Mercedes says the EQS system uses intelligent camera-based blocking logic: if the camera detects a driver is looking at the front passenger’s screen, it will automatically dim certain content – meaning drivers won’t be able to grab a diamond. A glimpse of any entertainment content on the go.

The navigation system is smart too. It is able to plan the fastest and most convenient route based on many factors (such as charging stops) and react dynamically to traffic jams or changes in driving style.

This includes a visualization in the MBUX infotainment system of whether the available battery capacity is sufficient to return to the starting point without charging.

Finally, Mercedes has confirmed that the EQE will have the best level of noise and vibration comfort, as well as the brand’s Energizing Air Control system, which uses filters and sensors to trap and expel fine particles, fine particles, pollen and other substances. Entering the cabin is through outside air.

There is no word yet on the EQE price tag, although we expect it to be just below the starting price of the EQS (around $120,000 / £90,000 / AU$170,000), hitting the range of Six numbers when adding optional extras.

The spectacular global launch of the EQE will take place in mid-2022, when Germany is expected to receive the first orders.
