American Emma Radocano’s dream continued when she reached the US Open quarter-finals for the first time in New York

British qualifier Emma Raducano made her US Open debut to remember after reaching the quarter-finals with another impressive victory over Shelby Rogers in front of a partisan crowd at home on Labor Day.

The 18-year-old showed that she was the real deal against American Rogers, the conqueror of top seed Ashleigh Barty, as she broke up 6-2 6-1 to become the youngest British player to reach the quarter-finals in New York in the Open Era.

“It’s a very wonderful feeling,” Radocano said in her court interview. “Shelby is a great opponent, she did really well at the US Open and had a great week so I knew it was going to be a tough match but I’m very happy I managed to get through some nerves at the start.”

Addressing the last British woman to win the US Open, who was watching the court, Virginia Wade said: “Thank you so much for watching my match. I really appreciate it.”

“You are an absolute legend so I am really honored to be here. I will just try to do my best every round and let’s see how far you go.”

The Kent teen, who matched her Wimbledon championships two months ago in reaching the fourth round after losing just one game in an overall weekend win over Sarah Sorribes Tormo, is looking to advance better on Arthur Ashe Court.

Raducanu has remarkably taken everything in her stride since retiring from Wimbledon due to breathing issues, but it took some time to get used to the surroundings, giving up her opening game before Rogers cemented a break.

Imagine making it to your first #USOpen and reaching the quarter-finals as a qualifier without losing a single set.

Apparently this was an incentive for Raducanu to start playing her game and it wasn’t long before she settled into the competition.

The world number 150 went into six straight matches to win her 13th straight set at Flushing Meadows.

Rogers, 10, suffered knee surgery and reached the quarter-finals last year, but the errors were intense and quick off her racket.

The Americans’ game collapsed with Raducanu winning 11 games in a row before Rogers finally stopped the rot.

However, Raducanu completed another famous fourth match point win to reach her first Grand Slam quarter-final against Belinda Bencic.

Raducano became the first woman since Jennifer Capriati in 1990 to reach at least the fourth round of her first two Grand Slam tournaments and is only the third qualifier to reach the quarter-finals in New York.

Emma Raducano reached the quarter-finals without dropping a single set.

This is her first major #USOpen pull. 🤯

Olympic gold medalist Bencic continued her stellar summer by defeating Iga Swatic.

After failing to serve the first set, she topped 26 tiebreakers and saved four set points to maintain her record of not dropping a full set of the championship with a 7-6 (14-12) 6-3 victory.

“I feel like I’ve experienced every match,” said the No. 11 in Switzerland. “Today it was definitely more difficult for me.”

Flushing Meadows has been Bencic’s most successful Grand Slam and this is the third time she has reached the quarter-finals, with her best result in the semi-finals two years ago.

Swiatek is the only woman to reach at least the fourth round at every Slam tournament this year, but the French Open is the only tournament she’s gone further than that.
