Gavin Williamson said he met Marcus Rashford – but he actually met Maru Itogi

Marcus Rashford mocked the gaffe of Education Secretary Gavin Williamson, who told the Evening Standard he met the England footballer on Zoom when he actually met England rugby star Maru Itogi.

Asked if he had met Rashford, who has forced the government to switch to providing free school meals during the pandemic, Williamson told the newspaper: “We met via Zoom and he seemed incredibly engaged, compassionate and charming, but then he had to shoot. Stop. I didn’t want to be the one stopping him from training him.”

But his advisers later told The Standard that he had met Etoji.

Responding to the story with a crying/laughing emoji, Rashford tweeted: “The accent could have been a gift.”

At one point during the pandemic, Williamson said he was scouring the world looking for laptops to give to children who were left behind.
