Manchester United champion gives Anthony Martial advice after Cristiano Ronaldo returns

Dimitar Berbatov believes Anthony Martial needs to become an even more sinister if he is to have a future at Manchester United.

Martial scored just seven goals in the 2020-21 retro season, and number nine is effectively the third striker for United behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani.

Paul Pogba, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford are arguably ahead of Martial in the queue on the left and Martial didn’t last an hour on his only start in August at Southampton.

Although Martial, 25, has enjoyed a moral time away from the French national team, starting in two of his three games and scoring the equalizer against Ukraine, his club’s future looks uncertain and his former Monaco teammate Berbatov would not be surprised if he left Martial. Next year.

“This is my only regret for it [Ronaldo] “Maybe Anthony will be a little careless and maybe he will be a victim of all this,” Berbatov told the Manchester Evening News. But we don’t know yet. We can speculate as much as we can but maybe he will surprise everyone with a tougher performance on the pitch.

“Because Ronaldo is in the team automatically, everyone – especially young players – will want to raise their level of play and performance on the field and in matches. In Anthony’s case, if he doesn’t get as much playing time as he wants, I will see him leave the club at some point, to be honest. .

“He’s a special guy, just like me, I don’t think a lot of people understand that he’s actually a good boy, he wants to do good, he trains well.

“My advice is to be a little more open, a little more vicious, but not as nasty as hitting people like cannons, but more, ‘I want to be the first choice. I want to prove how good I am. A little more ugliness to show the manager that ‘I am here, I want to stay and fight for my place.’ If not, the quality in him would be available to go elsewhere and find his luck there.

Martial and Berbatov celebrate after the latter scored for Monaco at Arsenal

“I have a weak place for Anthony because I played with him, he has great qualities. But if he doesn’t succeed and he doesn’t play, he has to go somewhere else.”

Martial is under contract with United until 2024 and the club has the option of an additional year. Cavani is expected to leave when his contract expires in June but United can still switch to a younger striker.

Dimitar Berbatov was speaking ahead of the launch of Betfair’s new VAR-Batov series, in which the Premier League legend will judge the unfair moments in football that affect many gamblers. Watch the first part of the series on Twitter Betfair next week.
