Timal Mills gives England a place in the T20 World Cup after a four-year absence | cricket

Tymal Mills of the Sussex Fast Bowler has returned to the international setting for the first time in four years in the England squad for the Men’s T20 World Cup that was announced on Thursday. Mills gets his chance with Jofra Archer ruled out due to injury, while Ben Stokes continues to take an indefinite break from cricket to prioritize his mental wellbeing.

Mills has been impressive this summer in the Vitality T20 Blast, helping Sussex reach the World Cup finals in Edgbaston later this month. He also demonstrated his skill and achievement in the hundreds, helping Southern Brave lift the Men’s Cup in the tournament’s inaugural year. Mills’ last appearance for England came in the T20 defeat of India in Bengaluru in February 2017.

Chris Silverwood, Technical Director said: “We are excited by the prospect of being challenged to win the T20 International Cricket World Cup. I believe we have chosen a squad that covers all bases and has the depth to succeed in what is expected to be a highly competitive tournament featuring the best players in the world.

Silverwood added: “Timal Mills deserves to be included and has shown over the past two years, but especially this summer, that he has all the skills needed to succeed at this level.”

“His exceptional speed is the best, and the way he led the attacks of Sussex and Southern Brave in the short match showed that he enjoys the pressures of the big stage. He will add versatility to our bowling unit, and we can’t wait to see him play in a major international tournament.”

England men’s T20 World Cup squad quick guide

Owen Morgan (Capt); Moen Ali, Jonny Bristow, Sam Billings, Joss Butler, Sam Curran, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingston, David Malan, Timal Mills, Adel Rashid, Jason Roy, David Wylie, Chris Walks, Mark Wood. Reserves: Tom Curran, William Dawson and James Vince.

Thank you for your feedback.

The 29-year-old has a vacant position in the England attack caused by Jofra Archer’s omission through injury, while there is good news for another tailor in his left arm, David Wylie, who beat Tom Curran in last bowling. Curran has been a mainstay for England’s white ball team but has struggled for consistency, falling behind Chris Walks and Chris Jordan in the standings.

Curran has been selected as one of three traveling reserve players who will rule the main team, along with Hampshire duo Liam Dawson and James Vince. Dawson has outplayed Lancashire’s Matt Parkinson to be the reserve spinning option, while Vince will provide the batting cover.

Despite expectations that stadiums in the United Arab Emirates will be easy to spin, Muin Ali and Adel Rashid are the only slow bowlers on the team. The third player for England will be Liam Livingston, whose primary role is the destructive middle-class batsman.

Having hit the English record 42 balls against Pakistan earlier this summer and topped the 100th, Livingston steps into the round on the crest of a wave and will be asked to provide the match-winning spark in the absence of Stokes.

England have until October 10 to finalize their pre-tournament squad. As part of the squad’s buildup, England are scheduled to play four warm-up matches, including a two-match T20I series against Pakistan. Both matches will be played at Rawalpindi International Stadium on 14 and 15 October.
