Emma Radocano could be among the top five tennis players in the world for the next two years, says Mats Wellander

Mats Wheelander believes Emma Raducano could be one of the top five women’s tennis players in the next two years.

Radokano, who reached the fourth round of Wimbledon on her maiden slam earlier this summer before withdrawing due to illness, has a real chance of advancing to the US Open final when she faces Greece’s 17th seed Maria Sakkari on Thursday night. Winning straight sets over Belinda Bencic, Eurosport’s Wellander believes Raducano has all the tools in her game to quickly become one of the best players in the world, calling it a “real deal”.

“I got off to a really bad start [against Bencic],” He said.

“I went down 3-1 and then turned it around like it was the most natural thing ever.

“Looked lost at first, didn’t feel the ball, especially on the front side, and then all of a sudden it plays like I’ve done it a million times. To close it off at the end too…

It’s a real 18-year-old bargain and I can’t imagine that Emma Radocano won’t be in the top five in a couple of years.

In addition to being impressed by her technical prowess, Wilander was struck by the mental strength of Raducanu at such a young age as well as her ability to enjoy herself at the same time.

“I find it hard to find a weak point in her game” – Wilander on Raducanu run

He added: “She’s only 18, she comes from Great Britain and there is a lot of pressure because of what happened to her at Wimbledon. She played really well but she couldn’t finish that last match.

“I’m so glad I was telling everyone during Wimbledon that Emma was the real deal.

“She’s moving really well and now she’s proving to everyone that sometimes we actually know what we’re talking about!

“She doesn’t get upset about anything and she’s having a good time. She obviously enjoys that which is amazing.”
