Lewis Hamilton continued Mercedes’ dominance over the weekend at the Italian Grand Prix by topping final practice ahead of Saturday’s Formula 1 Sprint, a session marred by a massive crash from Carlos Sainz at Ferrari.
Sainz took out red flags in the middle of the hour when he dunked a tire on a chicane in the Ascari chicane before hitting the barriers, badly damaging his car and spinning around.
The Spaniard was given an initial clearance entirely after medical checks, but Ferrari faces a major overhaul task in its car ahead of the F1 Sprint, an 18-lap dash around Monza that will set the grid for Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix.
Hamilton will go to Sprint – broadcast live on Sky Sports F1 at 3.30pm, with an increase from 2.25pm - as the favourite after showing his speed in second practice, which was essentially long-term training for the drivers.
Valtteri Bottas, who will line up ahead of Hamilton in the front row later in the day but faces a fine start with a penalty in Sunday’s race, finished second in practice, twenty off the lead.
Although Max Verstappen was on the slower mid-tyre, he returned 0.4sec – there was a clear margin all weekend between Mercedes and Red Bull – in third, where Sprint will start.
The championship leader finished ahead of teammate Sergio Perez, who faces the task of returning from nine on the grid at 3.30pm.
Martin Brundle was on the side of the road to catch a glimpse of the Curva Alboreto during FP2 at the Italian Grand Prix.

Esteban Ocon finished fifth, ahead of Robert Kubica in the Alfa Romeo, who seemed to be pushing harder than the others.
The 10-minute session was red flagged after Sainz crashed, his third in four races. Sainz, who is set to start the F1 Sprint from seventh, also had a detour in Hungarian GP qualifying, and Saturday morning practice last weekend in Zandvooort.
He said he was “injured, but it’s OK” on team radio after the accident, and will be checked at the medical center again before the F1 Sprint race.
