The English Channel Coast Guard recovered the body of a man after it was spotted by another ship.

Sussex Police said the body, which was recovered from the water this afternoon, was taken to Eastbourne.

Officers said the man was seen in the waters of the “Middle English Channel”. They did not recognize him or confirm his nationality.

Investigations began into the circumstances of his death.

The discovery of the body, in one of the world’s busiest shipping channels, comes amid a boom in stays after the UK’s coronavirus lockdown measures were eased.

It also comes after a record number of crossings of the canal that authorities attributed to pleasant weather after weeks of unstable conditions.

It is believed that at least 1,000 men, women and children were seen making the journey from France to the UK last week.

The Home Office estimated the figure lower, but it could not yet say whether the record had been broken.

Survival teams were seen bringing groups of migrants ashore, including an infant and several young children, after a day that saw the first people escorted to safety from the Channel to Dover in more than two weeks.

Eyewitnesses described authorities, including the Border Force and RNLI, as being very busy as there was believed to be a constant flow of crossings over calm waters and under warm, sunny skies.

The French authorities were also on alert for more migrant crossings.

Hundreds take refuge on British beaches

Kent-based Royal National Lifeboats Local Foundation (RNLI) teams picked up a small boat carrying a large group of migrants in Dungeness on Monday morning.

Crossings through the perilous Strait of Dover were quiet due to bad weather, but appear to have resumed in September with four boats arriving last Sunday and many believe they attempted the journey the following Monday.

Sunday’s arrival brought the total number of people who have crossed the UK on small boats this year to more than 12,500, according to data from the Palestinian News Agency.

The number of crossings in 2021 exceeded the annual total of 8,417 last year.
